What is Christian counseling?

Do you take my insurance?

With few exceptions, Cornerstone Christian Counseling does not bill insurance directly. Here’s why:

We want YOU to have a say in the counseling process:

We don’t know if you’ve tried, but we have. We’ve called our own insurance companies to try to set up an appointment with a counselor and have found that the wait to see someone is extensive, and the representative you speak with can tell you very little about the person you will be meeting with. You also may find that you are limited to a certain number of sessions to make progress towards your therapeutic goals, and there is less face-to-face time with your counselor.

If requested, we can provide an insurance Superbill for your counseling appointment at the time of service that may be used to submit to your insurance company for reimbursements. Many of our clients have high deductibles which they pay out of pocket anyway and want to choose a counselor for themselves vs having the insurance company choose for them.

What is a Superbill? A Superbill is essentially a receipt with specific insurance coding that you would submit directly to your insurance company. Depending on your personal plan and which insurance company you’re with, you may have dollar amounts applied to an out-of-network deductible or you may get reimbursed for a portion of your counseling costs. Every plan is different, so we recommend checking with your insurance carrier to evaluate the benefits of a Superbill before booking your first session. With Cornerstone being out of network, we do not verify insurance benefits.

Using Out-of-Network Benefits with a Superbill

To get started, contact your insurance company and ask:

  • “Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health services?”
  • “What is my out-of-network deductible, and has any of it been met?”
  • “How do I submit a Superbill for reimbursement?”

Please note:

  • You’ll pay Cornerstone directly at the time of service.
  • Reimbursement is not guaranteed and is usually partial, depending on your plan.
  • Most plans do not reimburse for couples counseling or family therapy, unless medically indicated.

Can Cornerstone Contact My Insurance for Me?

Unfortunately, we are not able to contact commercial insurance companies or accept payment directly from them on your behalf. However, if you’d like to use your out-of-network benefits, you may choose to submit a superbill to your insurance provider for possible reimbursement.

If you decide to submit a superbill, you’ll be responsible for handling reimbursement directly with your insurance company. Please note: if your therapist is unable to assign a diagnosis code, your superbill may be incomplete and could be denied by your plan.

If using in-network commercial insurance or Medicare is your only option, we encourage you to contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers near you.

For commercial insurance, if you choose to submit a superbill, you’ll need to handle reimbursement directly with your insurance company. Please note: if your therapist is unable to assign a diagnosis code, your superbill may be incomplete and could be denied by your plan.

If using in-network commercial insurance or Medicare is your only option, we encourage you to contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers near you.

Important Considerations When Using Insurance

We understand that using insurance can be a helpful way to make counseling more cost-effective. At the same time, it’s important to be aware of a few key limitations that may affect your coverage or privacy:

  • A mental health diagnosis is required for insurance reimbursement. This diagnosis becomes part of your official medical record.
  • Insurance companies may request access to clinical details, including progress notes or treatment plans, as part of their review process.
  • Out-of-network benefits often have a separate deductible from your in-network coverage, which means your out-of-pocket costs could be higher until that deductible is met.
  • Not all therapists are eligible for insurance reimbursement. Some of our providers are pre-licensed, and while they offer excellent care, certain insurance plans may not cover their services.

We believe in equipping you with the information you need to make the best decision for your care—whether that means using insurance or exploring other options.
