You may have heard, but we recently brought some incredible Masters-level interns onto our team and we want YOU to get to know a bit about each of them and to hear their fun personalities in our interview-style blog series! Next up is Alia Fisher!

1. What draws you to the counseling field?  Why do you want to become a therapist?
I believe that we are created by a relational God, and therefore are relational beings made for connection!  I believe counseling provides a unique opportunity to be seen, known, and valued.  I love this work.  It may sound like a typical or cliche answer, but I love it and I truly believe in it.  I believe there is power and meaning to be found in our stories, and I find it to be an honor to partner with you in finding yours.
2. Have you been through counseling yourself?  What was that experience like for you?
I have done a lot of counseling during the course of my life, with multiple therapists of all kinds of theoretical and faith orientations. I have found all of them helpful in one way or another and have never regretted digging in and facing the pain. I would not be where I am at without having had the opportunity to work with these therapists who walked with me through each difficulty. I found each one’s unique techniques helpful and I walked away with appreciation for all the different ways we can help others. While some of my issues were very vulnerable, I ultimately found great freedom in talking about them and it felt good not being alone and rather, having a sympathetic ear to listen and guide me.
3. What’s something you would tell someone who’s thinking about talking with a counselor?

Opening up to a counselor and facing the painful patterns and wounds in your life is one of the most powerful things you can do. While it takes vulnerability, humility, and self-reflection, it also has the capability to change the rest of your life! Why waste time doing the same thing when you can learn to think differently and do things differently? This is particularly true when God’s truth is infused in the counseling and is allowed to replace lies of identity and worth.

4. What is your favorite type of clientele/what are your specialties?

I work only with adults and late teens, including couples. My specialties include spiritual formation and direction, as well as self-esteem and identity issues. I also work with sexual issues, affairs, co-dependence, conflict resolution, and interpersonal relationships. I do not have a favorite type of clientele, but I have been surprised how much I like working with couples!

5. Tell us one random or fun fact about yourself

My first language is German, though I have no accent. However, now I have acquired an American accent when I speak German, much to my dismay!
