Philosophy and Therapeutic Approach

Philippians 4:12-13 are well known verses about how we can endure and have strength through all the ups and downs of life by relying on God. And that rightfully puts God at the center of our lives. Have you ever noticed verse 14 though? “Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles”. Yes, we can do all things through Christ, and it’s good to share in each other’s troubles. That’s what I’m here for—to share in your troubles and walk alongside you in your journey of growth.

Depending on your background, you may feel like counseling is part of maintaining your mental wellbeing or you may come from a background that is skeptical or even embarrassed about needing or wanting help. My goal is to create a space where you will feel comfortable without judgment so you can be open about what draws you in. I have a relational style that focuses on you, the expert in your life, and will work to meet you where you are at. I use a systemic approach that takes the emotional, spiritual, and physical elements of the individual, couple, or family into consideration.

What to Expect in Therapy

I think you will find my approach pragmatic as I believe, even the smallest step forward can start momentum. Using systems theory, I want to first spend time understanding you as a person or you as a couple and then work alongside you to develop and make progress towards your goals.

When working with couples and families, I consider the unit to be the client. So, no picking sides, no viewing one as worse than the other, just time and space to be open to learn how to manage the ups and downs of life together. I understand that time is important so you will find me approachable, curious, but also direct while advocating for your growth.

Personal Qualifications and Experience

I spent the first 25 years of my working life in a corporate setting ranging from learning and development to leading teams of over 300 employees. In that time, I wrote training curriculum and developed hundreds of leaders and found my passion in helping others grow. I went into an undergrad program, thinking I would become a physical therapist, but the closer I got to it the more I felt like it was not the right path. After a lot of prayer and consulting with my wife, I chose to pursue counseling instead.

I spent time in my church teaching the middle school boys Sunday school class and was the game director in the AWANAs program as well. Aside from having my own kids, these experiences taught me a lot about connecting with adolescents and some of the struggles they run into. I also work with an organization that takes dads and their children out for a two-to-three-day camping trip. We put them in difficult or hard to manage situations and use these experiences to draw them closer together and teach them how to effectively engage with each other.

Personal Interests

I am married with four kiddos (two teenagers and two babies). We are an outdoor family that loves all that our beautiful state has to offer. When there is spare time–with two teens and two babies, sometimes that is hard to come by–you will find us exploring in the mountains, tearing up a golf course, or just sitting on our patio enjoying the weather. I also enjoy running and have even run two ultra-marathons, without dying.

My family has a motto, “love God, love people”. God and community is important to us as we all need people around us to lift us up. We have all been through it, and we have all needed help from time to time. I look forward to helping you on your journey.
