“Empathy is the antidote to shame. When you put shame in a petri dish, it needs 3 things to grow exponentially: secrecy, silence, and judgement. If you put the same amount of shame in a petri dish and douse it with empathy, it can’t survive.” – Brené Brown

Philosophy and Therapeutic Approach

My goal in therapy is to join my clients in their pain and help them navigate their way through it. I want to empathically listen to your story and help you feel safe and comfortable. My goal is to not let anyone walk their journey alone. I believe that the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is the number one catalyst for change and healing, so I will invest time to build that relationship and trust with you.

I approach therapy as a collaborative experience as I work with you to establish goals that you want to achieve. That looks different for every client, so it’s important for me to listen intently as you tell me what you hope to gain from counseling. I am also trained in EMDR, so I utilize the techniques of that modality to aid in the healing process. This gives direction to our sessions and helps to make sure you get to the root of the issue and start healing there.

What to Expect in Therapy

Beginning therapy can be anxiety-provoking for some clients, so I try to establish a calm, safe environment through active listening and empathy. As I listen to your story, I hope to gain insights into who you are as a person and the things that helped you get to where you are. My belief is that everyone has been doing the best they have with what they have. It’s my job to help you gain some new skills and insights so that you can change the direction of your path if that is what you want to do.

In the first several sessions, we will work to build our relationship while helping you develop some internal resources or coping skills that will aid in your ability to handle life stressors as well as the uncomfortable memories we talk about. I will then help you identify various causes of your current issue, things that are triggering you, and goals for how you want to feel and act differently. We will then work together to source out the root causes of those issues.
If it is your desire, I would be happy to incorporate scripture, prayer, music, and other spiritual practices into your sessions. We will only do that with your permission, as I want to respect your spiritual journey and beliefs.

Personal Qualifications and Experience

I have always been that friend that other friends seek out to listen or get advice from. That was what led me to major in psychology at the University of Mississippi. I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in 2016 and immediately began my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling at the same school. After gaining wonderful knowledge and clinical experience, I graduated with my Master’s degree in 2018 and followed God’s prompting to move to Florida. I have worked in community mental health settings for the last 4 and a half years, working with a variety of client issues and demographics. I find that I do my best work with adults, couples, and teens who are invested in the therapeutic process.

Personal Interests

I am happily married to my wonderful husband, Mike, with whom I share a beautiful daughter. We enjoy spending time serving at church in various roles and departments. We are active in music, media, and young adult ministries.

I love to sing and often respond to people in my daily life in the form of song or Disney quote. All of the Disney classics live rent-free in my brain, so sometimes they are bound to come out! My husband and I are also avid boardgame players and often host our friends for some intense competitions.

If I have the time, I love to read. Christian fiction and murder mysteries are my go-to genres. I get in the zone and don’t put the book down until I’m finished! I also really enjoy podcasts about my favorite show, The Office. If you sit in my office, I’m sure you will spot a few references to the show.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair (Isaiah 61:1-3, NIV).
