We know what it’s like: you schedule a counseling appointment and meet with your counselor. During your time together, there are a few “ah-ha!” moments and you start making a mental list of things to try before your next counseling appointment. After a few days, you think back to your session and are unsure about what exactly you were hoping to work on. It happens to all of us! But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Setting some time aside after your session to do these five things will help you get the most out of counseling.

Here are 5 things to do between counseling appointments:

Reflect on what you discussed: Take some time to think about the topics covered during your session and how they relate to your thoughts and feelings. Bonus points: journal a list! You can find a wide variety of therapy journals on Amazon, many of which are designed for Christian counseling.

Practice self-care: Engage in activities that help you feel relaxed and recharged, such as exercise, reading, or spending time with loved ones.

Follow through on action steps: If your counselor gave you any assignments or suggested strategies to try, make an effort to follow through on these.

Reach out for support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or support groups for additional help and support.

Pray: Spend some time thanking God for any progress made and asking Him to continue to care for you as you reach for your goals.

Cornerstone Christian Counseling is here for you. When you’re ready, find a Christian counselor and tell us your story. Let’s write a new chapter, together.
