Philosophy and Therapeutic Approach

Stepping into therapy is a vulnerable experience, one that is as unique as your individual story. Your joys, mistakes, successes, tears, and aspirations mold you. Although we may try to escape our realities and hide ourselves, there is hope: growth and healing happen when you feel seen, understood, and valued. As your therapist, I will walk alongside you with a compassionate heart, a warm space, and an encouraging voice. We will identify the barriers preventing you from embracing your story with faith and resilience.

At the heart of our individual stories, I am deeply reminded of Psalm 139. In it, we uncover how the intrinsic value of our being is precious to God, so much so that He is intimately acquainted with all of our ways (verse 3). This Psalm displays the loving character of God by showing us that, despite our flaws and attempts to hide in fear and shame, He loves us unconditionally. So,  together we will invite the complexities of your life into your therapeutic journey as you discover just how fearfully and wonderfully made you are.

What to Expect in Therapy

Starting this journey is a powerful act of faith and courage. It is not easy to be vulnerable, but sharing your story within the safety of our client-therapist relationship can bring freedom and hope. One of my priorities in your care is to create the groundwork for trust and confidentiality. At first, this will look like getting to know your likes and dislikes, hobbies, family life, and establishing therapeutic goals.

Therapy, like life, is not linear. The therapeutic process is tailored to fit your needs and goals. To help you understand your story and what you desire to work on, we will explore the operations of the brain, cognitive distortions, core emotional needs, and maladaptive coping mechanisms. From there, we will collaborate on techniques and tools to improve your daily functioning, restore relationships, uncover unresolved trauma, and accomplish personal goals.

While much of the work we do together is collaborative, I hold space for you to lead the sessions because this is your story. You lead, and I am here with you every step of the way. Should you ever want prayer, meditation, art, music, or other forms of expression to be incorporated into your sessions, I am happy to do so.

Personal Qualifications and Experience

Part of why I am so drawn to the idea of “owning your story” in counseling is because I understand how complex that can be. I come from a dual-military home, with both parents in the military for 20+ years. Growing up had its challenges: moving constantly, being the quiet new kid everywhere, and at times being separated from both parents while they were deployed for months at a time. In spite of the difficulties and uncertainty, my parents strove to ensure our family’s foundation never departed, even while dealing with their own traumas. Now, with my parents retired, I understand the deep importance of connection and healthy relational attachment, and I am passionate about the healing necessary in our childhoods and family of origin stories.

I obtained my Master’s in Professional Counseling from Southeastern University. Completing my two-year internship under a clinical psychologist gave me the wonderful opportunity to work with active-duty, retired, and dependent military families. I find joy in working with a wide range of ages, from adolescents to older adults. Additionally, at my local church, I lead the kids and youth ministry; they are the heartbeat of the next generation and have a special place in my heart.

A Little About Me

I love all things fall… sweater weather, pumpkin spice, apple cider, and the color of the changing leaves. Now, in Florida, I know I can only get half of that list—if I am lucky! I am also a huge foodie, so hit me with all of the recommendations you’ve got! Lastly, I love to dance, something I have done since I was young.
