Mission: Why We Do What We Do

Sometimes, in the day-to-day, it’s easy to lose sight of why we do what we do.  We wake up, start our days, and go to work.  We see clients, or answer phone calls, or reply to emails, or fix billing issues.  We check and re-check the budget, we troubleshoot problems, we talk to attorneys.  Some days we engage with our co-workers a lot; sometimes we hardly see or speak to anyone else.  Sometimes we’re fired up and excited about what we do each day, and sometimes, well, it just feels like…work.

I will be the first to speak to and acknowledge the growth and change that Cornerstone has seen over the years.  We have gone from a team that could sit around a single table in a cramped conference room to a group of folks that requires two pavilions at a park for a summer BBQ just to accommodate everyone (WHAT?!).  If you think the change has been staggering for you, you’re not alone.

But why?

It’s a question that is good and fair to ask.

Why so much change over the years?

Why so much growth?

I’ve heard it from a number of people who have been here four or more years: Cornerstone “feels” different than it did before.

Is this necessarily a bad thing?  I think not.

I don’t have to tell you that there are a lot of hurting people in the world.  Since COVID, the prevalence of mental health issues in wide swaths of the population has become even more widespread.  And while we can’t help everyone, we can do our part to show up in the communities we have been entrusted to serve, giving people the opportunity to heal, grow and thrive (that’s our mission, by the way).

In case you missed it, Cornerstone’s core verse is John 10:10.  Jesus is talking about how the “thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. (But) I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

We want to help restore marriages.  We want to help people heal from past hurts and traumas.  We want to help people find hope for their future.  We want kids to reclaim their childhoods and be, well, kids.  We want families to stay together and to heal relational ruptures.  We don’t want anxiety or depression or habits or addictions to run people’s lives.

We want abundant life for people.

We want to help people heal, grow, and thrive.

That’s why we do what we do.  That’s why we show up each day.  Because we believe that when Jesus said his aim was to give people abundant life, he meant it.  And we’re just crazy enough to believe that he can use us to help bring that to fruition in people’s lives, families and marriages.

So why would we play small with that?

Why wouldn’t we want to try to take that to as many people as possible?  In Colorado?  In Florida?  And wherever else the Lord may lead?  Why wouldn’t we grow our team?  Why wouldn’t we increase our internship program to help grow up the next generation of Christian counselors?  Why wouldn’t we accept Medicaid, work to open more offices, and even lay the foundation for a non-profit?  It’d be crazy not to.

We exist to help people heal, grow, and thrive.

So have things changed over the years?   Absolutely.  But friends, we have been entrusted with an immense gift to steward.  We are the holders of hope for people.  We are the conduits of the Holy Spirit who can (and does) breathe life into dry bones – marriages, relationships, people’s pasts and their futures.  What an incredible honor to be a part of someone’s story, someone’s journey towards health and growth and the thriving, abundant life Jesus died to give us all.

So thank you for being on this journey with us.  Thank you for showing up so faithfully day after day.  Thank you for letting the Holy Spirit guide you and work in and through you to lead people towards abundant life so they can heal, grow and thrive.  That is our mission, and we will chase that down, reaching as many people as we can in His name, for as long as He allows.

To God be the glory.
