Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal Assisted Therapy

We may not be that different from other states, but in case you haven’t noticed, Coloradans sure love their dogs!  And why not?  They provide companionship and generally speaking, just make us happy.  That’s why Cornerstone is proud to offer Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) as part of our counseling services.

AAT began in the early 1990s and is a relatively new field. Since then, however, it has grown in popularity and has gained wide acceptance and is evolving into mainstream psychology.

Research shows that involving animals in the counseling process can have an incredible influence on the physical and emotional healing of people.

These benefits include but are not limited to:

  • reduction in blood pressure
  • lowered stress and anxiety levels
  • enhanced self esteem
  • increased emotional awareness and regulation
  • development of healthy boundaries
  • reduced loneliness
  • improved assertiveness
  • helps children and teens to be more open and receptive to counseling
  • diminished emotional and physical pain in seniors
  • helps draw attention outward, thus lessening anger and depression
  • stimulates and releases endorphins that make people feel good
